ART AND TECHNOLOGY

Signal Processing EXTENDED INFO

Highlights from MAGIC MONTAGE AND IMAGE PROCESSING.

Explanations of some of the Analog Synthesizers
in the computer a tool for thought experiments reading.
The imagery and sound in Entering were performed 'live' by Donebauer and composer Simon Desorgher, and recorded in real time, using a colour TV studio at the Royal College of Art. Later Donebauer and Richard Monkhouse developed the Videokalos synthesizer, as an image-sound performance instrument. Entering was transmitted by the BBC in 1974.

THE FILTER AS AN EXTENSION OF OUR SENSES

PROCESSING THE IMAGE: Alternative Visions
(100 Points) DUE FEB. 23RD
(Video with statement should be posted to the blog.)

Assigned Reading for NEXT WEEK: ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY PDF (<<Click Here)

Your assignment is create a 2-3 min video with the use of any and all of the video effects within the video effects folder on Adobe Premiere. I want you to shoot your own footage that conceptual develops around the idea of seeing, being seen, and alternative ways of seeing. You are to experiment with layering various filters that ideally will push the boundaries of how you perceive the footage. It is in the layering of filters and the exploration of the possibilities where new ways of seeing can be found. You will loose points if you only use one effect "out of the box". I want you to modify, alter, layer, copy & paste, and play. A successful project will be one that is full of play. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. I then want you to write about how the filters you placed upon your footage and how they changed it. This will result in 2 paragraph statement that will factor into the grade. Ask yourself these questions: How does it change the content of your footage? Does it add anything or take away anything visually? Does the filter add any content of its own (The Medium is the Message)? If the visual effect was a metaphor what would it be?

Here is an example of what I would consider ample play.

MONTAGE: DESCRIBING AN EVENT

Assignment DUE Feb. 20th

MONTAGE: Creating A Cinematic Space
What does it look like?

"What is montage? There are at least a few recognizable definitions for the word. The most common of these is: a Specific Sequence of images in a film, usually without words and often set to music. For clarity I choose to call this "Montage Sequence." Many films use this technique to express the passage of time or a sequence of events with little or no dialogue." This is not what I'm going to be asking of you. As the examples I showed in class, I want you to develop a collection of elements (shots) that build something- "Tastes, sights, sounds, textures, and smells. Because film/video is purely an audio-visual medium, film montage is based on building up structures that affect the visual and audio senses." - Sergei Eisenstein.

Here are the rules. You must build up 3 different events via montage (30-45 Sec. Total) with breaks in-between each of them. Today in class I want you to develop a storyboard planning out your shots and content. You must include the extreme close-up and 2 other of the framing techniques you see below\/\/\/\/. No music allowed. Foley Techniques should be used to enhance the edit and what is taking place on screen. Use the clip from Shawn of the Dead as a good example. Focus on shapes from one frame to the next matching shapes can help the edit. Paying attention to the flow of movement from one clip to another can give the edit even more flow and oomph. You are also required within the total length of the piece to do the following camera techniques. 1-Use a tripod with no camera movement, 2-Fulid Pan, 3- Zoom, and 4-Hand Held camera movements. You are at your own creative disposal of what you decide to shoot.
