LET THE DATA FLOW

DATA FLOW >>\/\/\/\/
"Visual metaphors are a powerful aid to human thinking. From Sanskrit through hieroglyphics to modern alphabet, we have ciphers, objects, and illustrations to share meaning with other people, thus enabling collective and collaborative thought. As out experience of the world has become more complex and nuanced, the demands to our thinking aids have increased proportionally. Diagrams, data graphics, and visual confections have become the language we resort to in this abstract complex world. They help us understand, create, and completely experience reality." RE: The Diacritics of Glitchr

The Diacritics of Glitcher by Louis Doulas
Diacritics are accent marks used to indicate the type of pronunciation a certain word infers. Diacritics are used in Latin script, but are also specific to other alphabetic systems such as the vowel pointing scripts of the Arabic harakat. In Laimonas Zakas’ project, Glitchr, a facebook page is dedicated to glitchily deforming the posting interfaces of Facebook.  Diacritical marks are emptied from their primary communicative signifiers and repurposed as formalized, aestheticized objects; accomplices in the jailbreaking of Facebook page hegemony.
Rather then its users shaping and determining its network, Facebook is known—amongst other things—for creating quite the opposite for users: a loss of control, of malleability and the continued reiteration of a standardized user conduct.  Glitchr then, in such a world, becomes a refreshing, if not odd spectacle: gifs become enabled, symbols and text float around up and down the page never adhering to the coded structure within.
Though Glitchr to some degree interrupts the normativity of the Facebook structure revealing what one can safetly get away with, its subversive aesthetics survive only as mirage in the desert of the Zuckerberg empire.

GLitacha SOME MEDIA

DUE APRIL 3RD
Your homework for this week is to find a glitch, make a glitch, reduplicate a glitch, and then explore, experiment, and play with its Aesthetic Potentials. Create and test with any digital medium audio, video, and still images. A glitch is something that happens spontaneously as we use technology. Glitch art mistaking notice of the glitches around us and exploiting, exploring, pioneering, playing, understanding, and admiring their aesthetic imperfections and philosophical implications. You are to produce and share at one of the following: 3 Images, 1 video with 3 different glitches, or 1 audio piece with 3 different glitches.

Glitches can be frustrating on PC's just a warning. I encourage you to help one another if you find an interesting tutorial or method share it with the group. Work in teams SHARE INFORMATION... Errata (16mm, 2005) is an experimental film in which I used a photocopier to generate frames of animation. Each frame of the film is a photocopy of the previous frame. Both black & white and color photocopies were used to make this film, approximately 4,600 copies total.
Oops! Too Many Cats!
After making multiple cat-based-artworks, Satrom became concerned of being pigeon-holed as a cat-artist and created "Too Many Cats Game,” intended to be his last cat-based work. The game is as unbeatable as Satrom's goal is unattainable.

RESTORATION PROJECT

HOMEWORK DUE MARCH 20TH
Your assignment has several options and components. The core idea is to restore 2 old photographs that has imperfections, scratches, folds, extra... Here is where you have a few options. I am supplying 3 photographs I bought at an antique store and you are more than welcome to work from 2 of these, however what I think would be more interesting and potentially rewarding/sentimental is to ask your relatives of photos that might be important to them to be restored and reprinted. I know my grandmother had boxes in her attic and new of a few that she really wanted to save. If you are scanning your own photographs in, then I would suggest scanning them in at 24-bit color at 600 dpi. Also if you are scanning in and fixing your own it is then required to show the BEFORE and the AFTER images. You will be using techniques learned in class like levels, clone stamp tool, content aware, and sharpening techniques.

The 2 restored images are two final products, however there is a second component or third image I'd like for you to create. Taking one of the 2 finished image I'd like for you to then place an object or objects into the photograph and make it make sense within the photograph this could be highly realistic or fictional/humorous. This component will reinforce the selection tools, layers, layer styles, and the tools mentioned above. The complete homework will then have 2 restored images before and after if they were your own, and 1 duplicate of those 2 with additional objects, people, things, extra.

THE SIX WORD GAME DUE MARCH 8th
You are to pick 6 words:
  1. 1 - Adjective
  2. 1 - Part of the body
  3. 1 - Noun
  4. 1 - Object
  5. 1 - Famous Person
  6. 1 - Emotion
The rest of the rules. The first 5 words are to be searched in google images. Make sure you do any size only large. You are required then to use the first image that comes up in the large section. Using the selection tools and the use of layers try to create an image that reflects the 6th word.

The piece should be a regular 8.5x11 document size at 300dpi. Once you are done go to file save as and save it as a JPEG and then post it to the blog by class on Thursday March 8th. Please use the Lynda tutorials I suggest below if you are brand new to Photoshop. Best of luck... Eric
